The Antidepressant Trap
The prescription of antidepressants seems to be the only solution offered by the medical profession. And yet there is no biological test for depression, and in many cases prescription is based on a fleeting knowledge of the patient gained from a consultation lasting less than ten minutes. To make matters worse, the addictive nature of antidepressants mimics the causes of depression during withdrawal from the drug – and so the patient is often left mistakenly believing that they need the pharmacy. Fortunately in some countries the authorities are re evaluating antidepressant usage. (To learn more about hypnotherapy and overcoming antidepressant usage click here).
In the UK The Lancet (the leading medical journal) expressed outrage that GlaxoSmithKline had issued an internal memo encouraging the ‘management of recent research data’ that showed Paxil was no more effective than a placebo in children. Subsequently the selective reporting of the performance of antidepressants has come under scrutiny. So much so that the prescription of antidepressants to children and adolescents is virtually illegal. Its use in adults is questionable at best. Increasingly the medical profession is becoming aware that antidepressants can in many (probably most) cases actually cause more problems than they solve. Addiction to antidepressants (tactfully rephrased as ‘dependence’ in the packaging) is now common place.
The book 'The Antidepressant Solution" By Dr. Glenmullen is a valuable read for anyone considering anti depressants. As with most things, self education is very valuable when listening to 'experts'. It's remarkable how a little common sense is often all that stands between you and a well meaning but dangerously blinkered professional causing lasting damage.
There are many alternatives to antidepressants. Hypnotherapy is one.
